Thank you Kaosun.  I appreciate the information.  For the CD player itself, does it's own charging circuit just provide the 7.4V (when plugged in) all the time or does it actually monitor the charging voltage of the batteries?  Thanks again.

The DC from AC adapter is much higher than 7.4V, probably up to 12V. The charging IC BQ2057 will monitor and determine how to charge the cells. It's your choice which IC you are going to use while it's IC's choice how to charge your cells. Choose right person to do his job.
